Why Paper Sculpture?
When we think Paper, we often think 2D. We think delicate and vulnerable, easily ripped. When we think Sculpture, we think 3D. We think sturdy and permanent, made of stone, plaster, or metals. These artists dared to think differently about paper and sculpture by combining them - something delicate, fragile, non-permanent. The artists take something that is flat and make it tangible, creating depth using layers of thin paper. The amount of detail and time spent with a material we come across every day makes us pause and consider paper differently. We find it amazing because we haven't really thought of paper in this way. It challenges us, it makes us think. And it makes us want to try it. What will YOU do amazing with paper?
What transferable skills will I be building by doing this?
Planning Ahead: This project is one where you need to have an end goal in mind- what do you want it to look like in the end? If you don't have a clear picture, you will not be as successful. Planning ahead is a skill that is easily transferable to career positions where you need to be the VISIONARY, LEADER, and PLANNER
Detail-oriented: In order to be successful with your end goal, you need to know the small steps it takes to get there. There is no cutting corners on this project - you must pay attention to what details are needed to pull off your end vision. Careers want detail-oriented people, that can see what little steps need to be taken in order to be successful
Problem-Solving: Only you have the final vision for your project in your head --you are not following a step-by-step instruction, you are making your own art and being creative. This means that when you come across a problem, you must creatively problem solve it.
Patience: Rushing can cause ripping! This is a delicate material, and it takes effort to not break it. You will need to be patient enough to allow for your sculpture to come alive. You are building hand-eye coordination, awareness, etc. Think --would you want your heart surgeon to not have patience?
Creativity: How will you make your paper come alive? Only YOU can do this! So many jobs required creative visionaries --people who are willing to take risks to accomplish their vision.

Techniques of Paper Sculpture
Quilling
VOCABULARY: - Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs.
Layering
SPACING IS IMPORTANT IN ORDER TO GIVE DEPTH- use cardboard or foam in between layers
If you are creating a LANDSCAPE, dull colors will be in the back and bright colors will be in the front. Also, more detail is in the front.
Choose THICK paper or reinforce paper- consider a frame to hold in place.
FOLD- Origami
There are many tutorials out there on how to FOLD paper without cutting it to create different forms- origami. However, the CHALLENGE is to be creative if you are using folding techniques. Will you create an interesting scene using a hundred cranes? Will you combine multiple techniques, experiment, and create your own origami? Will you fold AND cut to create a beautiful flower?
